TCL has confirmed that it had acquired Palm and said it will create a new California-based Palm, Inc.
“Palm brand has always been synonymous with innovation throughout its history. As such it has consistently acted as a pioneer of mobile technologies. Now is the time to revive and bring back this pioneer spirit,” said in a statement.
There are no detailed plans yet for the new Palm, but the statement said it will involve Palm’s fans in rebuilding the brand.
“Palm has always carried a lot of affect and emotions. That’s why TCL has set the direction to rebuild the brand involving Palm’s very own community, making it the largest scale crowd-sourced project ever seen in the industry.”
TCL Communication Technology Holdings Ltd. George Guo, however, said they may not use webOS, the well-loved operating system created by Palm.
“We are open to all ideas, but probably not webOS,” Guo reporterly told PhoneScoop.
Last November, the Palm.com domain name started redirecting to mynewpalm.com. A month later, MakaPalm reported that it has found documents indicating that TCL may be the new owner of the brand.
